Interesting stuff that crossed my radar in the last week of the year:
- I sometimes get so mired in day-to-day news frenzy that I lose the big picture. As the year ends, Heather Cox Richardson zooms out — a reflection on US politics since the 1920s, but especially since Ronald Reagan.
- MachinePix is a delightful Twitter follow — steady stream of videos of machines doing interesting things. The account published a thread of its ten most popular tweets of 2020. Stick around for the explosive hydroforming!
- Jose Canseco has a message for the entire planet, except for A-Rod.
- One year ago, AP had a short write-up on a breaking story: China investigates respiratory illness outbreak sickening 27
- Ed Yong has been reporting on the coronavirus all year. He’s a skilled scientific communicator. He explains biology and epidemiology in words that ordinary folks can understand. His final story this year looks at COVID-19 in 2021 and beyond: Where Year Two of the Pandemic Will Take Us. Section VI, on lessons learned, is especially good.
- Mackenzie Scott is the ex-wife of Jeff Bezos, an author and now an impressive philanthropist. She gave away four billion dollars this year to 384 charities who didn’t expect her money. She writes about who she gave it to and why she did it.
- What’s the difference between brown and white eggs?
Happy 2021, gang!
